The Homeowners’ Goals

  1. Safety first. The customer wanted a zero-threshold shower, better lighting, and slip-resistant floors.

  2. Age-in-place gracefully. Universal-design touches (lever faucets, comfort-height toilet, wide entry) keep the bath usable for decades.

  3. Modern, easy-care finishes. Quartz counters, large-format tile, and frameless glass minimize grout lines and simplify cleaning.

  4. Cohesive look between the two baths. Needed the same fresh style on a tighter footprint and budget.

Design Highlights

1. Walk-In Shower With Frameless Glass

Goodbye, dated fiberglass insert. We demoed down to studs, waterproofed with Schluter® systems, then installed vein-cut marble tile banded with mosaic accent strips. The 3/8-inch frameless glass keeps sightlines open and reflects natural light from the octagon window, making the space feel larger.

2. Quartz-Topped Vanities

Both baths now feature custom shaker cabinets in a timeless gray-blue (Sherwin-Williams “Naval”) topped with Arctic-white quartz. Quartz resists stains, requires zero sealing, and pairs beautifully with the polished-nickel hardware.

3. Slip-Resistant Porcelain Floors

Large 12 × 24 matte-finish tiles cut grout joints by 40 % compared with the old 12 × 12 ceramic. An understated concrete-look gray ties the two rooms together and hides everyday dust—perfect for busy retirees.

4. Thoughtful Fixtures & Accessories
  • Lever-style faucets are arthritis-friendly.

  • A handheld shower plus bench offers flexibility for limited mobility days.

  • Towel bars double as grab rails (rated 250 lb).

  • Layered LED lighting—recessed ceiling, sconce, and vanity strips—banishes shadows.

Before-and-After Wow

The couple’s favorite upgrade? The frameless glass shower. It transformed a cramped corner into the visual star of the ensuite—complete with a sparkling new chandelier that scatters light across the marble.

Why Universal Design Matters

  • Reduces fall risk: Zero-threshold entries cut tripping hazards.

  • Protects resale value: 77 % of buyers say an accessible primary bath is a plus (National Assoc. of Home Builders).

  • Future-proofs the home: Simple upgrades today can save thousands in retrofits tomorrow.
